Geothermal Atlas: Information Portal for Shallow Geothermal Energy
The GeoSphere Austria Geothermal Atlas provides information on shallow geothermal energy in Vienna. Through the web application, geothermally relevant geodata can be visualized, site-specific data can be queried, and both heating and cooling potentials can be calculated. The underlying methodological and base data were developed as part of the project "Green Energy Lab – Spatial Energy Planning". The Geothermal Atlas already contains data on borehole heat exchangers and thermal groundwater use, including baseline data, protected areas, and resource capacities. An expansion to further federal states and additional potential calculations is in preparation.
application
- Information Portal
Geothermal Atlas
- Web portal for the search, visualization, and assessment of the potential of shallow geothermal energy
Provides initial assessments of the existing potentials and possible usage restrictions for shallow geothermal energy (borehole heat exchangers and thermal groundwater use) at the individual land parcel level
The methodology and data basis were developed by GeoSphere Austria in cooperation with the City of Vienna and within the "Green Energy Lab - Spatial Energy Planning" project. The datasets are based on hydrogeological and geothermal modeling (soil/subsurface temperature, thermal conductivity, hydraulic parameters). The current focus encompasses Vienna with detailed potential calculations for borehole heat exchangers as well as resource and constraint data for thermal groundwater use. The spatial resolution of the underlying raster data varies between 25 m and 100 m, depending on the specific thematic parameter.
