Il progetto Carta Litologica si avvia nel 2005 come rielaborazione della Carta Geologica d'Italia alla scala 1:100.000 in formato vettoriale. Il progetto è stato realizzato da un gruppo di lavoro del Servizio Geologico.

Il progetto database della Carta Litologica si avvia nel 2005 come rielaborazione della Carta Geologica d'Italia alla scala 1:100.000 in formato vettoriale. Sono state re-interpretate le formazioni geologiche presenti, con le relative note illustrative, nonchè i prodotti cartografici di maggior dettaglio, si è quindi proceduto a classificare ogni unità geologica utilizzando la nuova legenda litologica elaborata. Il lavoro ha impegnato un gruppo di lavoro del Servizio Geologico d’Italia per oltre quattro anni, fino alla redazione definitiva della Carta Litologica d’Italia in scala 1:100.000.
