Abstract:
Following an proposal of the Austrian geologists Franz Ritter von Hauer (1822-1899) and Eduard von Mojsisovics (1839-1907) the International Geological Congress at its meeting in Bologna 1882 decided to publish a general geological map of Europe at a scale of 1:1,500,000 in 49 sheets. Heinrich Ernst Beyrich (1815 - 1896) and Wilhelm Hauchecorne (1828 - 1900) were entrusted with the execution of this map series. Franz Heinrich August Beyschlag (1856-1935) was involved from 1893 onwards. The first complete edition of the International Geological Map of Europe was available in September 1913, 32 years after the resolution was passed. The historically significant and unique map series was scanned and georeferenced at GeoSphere Austria and is now available as a public map service.

statement:
Data Source and Processing:
GeoSphere Austria (2024), ESRI Mosaic dataset. The 49 sheets were scanned and georeferenced at GeoSphere Austria.
Projection:
Regarding the map projection, Martin (1987) on page 8 provides the following information: "There are no longer any details available regarding the construction of the map grid. In the 1950s, Prof. Heissler of the former Technical University of Hanover was asked to determine the projection used based on the available sheets. In his report, he determined from the one-degree grid on the sheets that the meridians are depicted as straight lines, the parallels are represented as concentric circles of equal distance, and concluded that a medium-distance preserving conical projection with two latitudes depicted as true to length, φ1 and φ2, underlies the map. With an uncertainty of 1°, he specifies φ1 = 38°N and φ2 = 58°N".
