This map is one of the 'deliverables' of the BRGM R&D project 'GIS Europe' that was initially undertaken as part of the ESF (European Science Foundation) GEODE (Geodynamics and Ore Deposit Evolution) programme, ABCD (Alpine-Balkan-Carpathian-Dinarides) sub programme. The first synthesis produced within the frame of this programme (Metallogenic map of Central and Southeastern Europe), has later been completed with scientific work realized for developing several regional- to country-scale GIS (e.g. SIG Mines France [BRGM], GIS Karelia [RFML – Russian-French Metallogenic Laboratory], GIS Caucasus [BRGM – CNRS], etc.), to finally end up in a Pan-European synthesis. The coverage has mainly been created by digitalization and synthesizing of published national geological maps after applying a standardized legend based on the age and the lithology of the mapped units. The used input maps of all countries in the area have been published at a 1:500,000 scale or less and allow to certify the precision of the synthesis at a 1:1,500,000 scale. Some key areas like the Alps have been completely redrawn. Note that the Fenno-Scandinavian part of the map has been produced by the Geological Surveys of Finland, Norway and Sweden. BRGM input is nil, and limited to an attempt to homogenize legends in order to present an exhaustive synthesis
