Legacy BGS geothermal models: theoretical potential 'heat-in-place' ('geothermal resources' in Rollin et al.,1995) for Permian sedimentary aquifers in the Cheshire (Collyhurst Sandstone Formation) and Worcester (Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation) basins

This vector contour dataset represents the distribution of the estimated, theoretical potential 'geothermal resources' (in GJ/m2 or PJ/km2) for the Permo-Triassic sedimentary aquifers in the Cheshire and Worcester basins, for resource temperatures greater than 40 °C. This dataset is the heat-in-place, and represents the amount of heat contained in the productive parts of the identified aquifers. The theoretical potential for the Permian aquifers in the Eastern England and Wessex basins was not calculated due to their insufficient reservoir porosity and transmissivity to be considered as a hot sedimentary aquifer resource. Data Quality

These theoretical potential 'geothermal resource' maps were developed as part of a reappraisal of the low enthalpy geothermal resources for the Mezosoic basins of England by Rollin et al. (1995). Rollin, K. E., G. A. Kirby, and W. J. Rowley. Atlas of geothermal resources in Europe: UK revision. British Geological Survey technical report WK/95/7, Regional Geophysics Group, 1995: https://webapps.bgs.ac.uk/data/publications/publication.html?id=21735106. The 'geothermal resources' were calculated for the Permian formations in the Cheshire Basin (Collyhurst Sandstone Formation) and Worcester Basin (Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation) using a simple volume model of heat-in-place, based on revised models of the geology, structure and thickness of the main aquifers and of the subsurface temperature distribution. All resources were estimated from digital grids of reservoir parameters (i.e porosity, volumetric heat capacity) at data interval of 1 km. Porosity values were determined from digital compensated neutron, formation density and sonic logs from deep wells and from laboratory measurements. The maps for each basin were vectorised and merged into a single layer as part of the 2025 UK Geothermal Platform project.
