Para la confección del mapa del karst se realizó una primera selección, a partir de todos los mapas de síntesis geológica a escala 1:200.000 del IGME (publicados entre 1970 y 1973) de todos los afloramientos potencialmente karstificables existentes en nuestro país. Así se compuso un primer mapa de aproximación de materiales karstificables existentes, ya fueran carbonatados, yesíferos, detríticos (sólo de los que teníamos evidencia en su karstificación) o mixtos. A partir de este primer esbozo se fueron realizando sucesivas correcciones con los datos del "Mapa geológico de la Península Ibérica, Baleares y Canarias" a escala 1:1.000.000 (IGME -1980), del "Mapa de vulnerabilidad a la contaminación de los mantos acuíferos de la España Peninsular, Baleares y Canarias" de la misma escala (IGME-1972)y del "Mapa Hidrogeológico", también de la misma escala, que, en aquella época, estaba en fase de realización por el IGME. Posteriormente se fueron haciendo cada vez aproximaciones más detalladas, en ciertas zonas, a partir de mapas hidrogeológicos, geomorfológicos y geológicos (serie MAGNA), con escalas de trabajo diferentes, que han ido desde 1:50.000 hasta 1:400.000.
