De los depósitos más representativos (7.162, de los cuales 574 corresponden específicamente a balsas de residuos mineros) se elaboró una ficha completa con toda la información de cada estructura. Todo el inventario fue volcado a una Base de Datos creada para tal fin en lenguaje COBOL-81 desarrollándose posteriormente en un sistema de Base de Datos Relacional (ORACLE). Entre 1999 y 2002 el IGME realizó una revisión de este inventario reflejada en el proyecto "Actualización del Inventario Nacional de Balsas y Estériles Mineros". El resultado fue la obtención de información actualizada de 988 estructuras frente a las 674 que contenía el inventario anterior y se creó una base de datos en ACCESS, con toda la información recogida en los trabajos de campo y también se desarrolló una aplicación para la generación de la ficha descriptiva de las estructuras a partir de la información contenida en la base de datos. En 2010 esta base fue migrada a SQL Server 2008, a partir de la cual se realiza la aplicación Inventario Nacional de Depósitos de Lodos y en 2013 se crea el Servicio WMS del Inventario Nacional de Depósitos de Lodos 2002.
