The ultimate goal of the vulnerability map is the subdivision of an area into several units showing the differential degree of vulnerability. Isolated areas or vulnerability classes are presented in different colors or hatches, very easy to understand for the entire professional public, not just geological (which is very important for understanding the results offered by such a map). In combination with risk maps (showing the location and character of pollutants) groundwater vulnerability maps are used as a guide for the location of future developments in an area, in order to minimize the impact that the projected development will have on the surrounding water resources. Оцјена потенцијалне угрожености подземних вода од загађења (односно природне рањивости), представља неопходну основу за било коју врсту планирањa и управљањa подземним водним ресурсима. Циљ израде ове карте је класификација и издвајање подручја са различитим степеном рањивости, односно потенцијалне угрожености. Издвојена подручја, односно класе рањивости приказују се различитим бојама или шрафурама, веома лако разумљивим за цјелокупну стручну јавност, не само геолошку (што је јако битно за разумијевање резултата које нуди једна оваква карта). У комбинацији са картама ризика (приказ локација и карактера загађивача) омогућују да се при просторном планирању и при изради водопривредних планова подручја и других развојних и техничких докумената, превентивно заштите подручја од посебног значаја (изворишта, неискорићене резерве квалитетних вода, национални и паркови природе и сл.).
