The Geological Maps of the Republika of Srpska 1: 300 000 and the accompanying interpreter, maps and interpreters of the OGK SFRY 1: 100 000 which covers the territory of the Republic of Srpska as well as the latest results printed in publications or presented at conferences and congresses were used as the basis for preparing this map. The study and knownledge about geological formations is essential for mineral researches, engeenering geology, hydrogeology as well as enviromental protects. Формациона геолошка карта Републике Српске 1:300 000, представља тематску прегледну геолошку карту на којој је основна картирајућа јединица формација, a која уједно представља један од фундаменталних геолошких појмова. Као основа за израду карте, поред Геолошке карте Републике Српске 1:300 000 и пратећег тумача, коришћене су карте и тумачи ОГК СФРЈ 1:100 000 листова који захватају територију Републике Српске као и најновији резултати штампани у публикацијама или приказани на конференцијама и конгресима а односе се на геолошка истраживања територије Републике Српске. Проучавање и познавање геолошких формација је од суштинског значаја како за истраживање минералних сировине, инжењерску геологију, хидрогеологију тако и за заштиту животне средине. Following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, the former member states continued to work on producing this map for their territories. After the completion of the Basic Geological Map of the Republic of Srpska (1:300 000), the creating of the Formation Geological Map began in accordance with the Long-Term Program for the Development of Basic Geological Research of the Republic of Srpska. In addition to the Geological Map of the Republic of Srpska (1:300,000) and the Interpreters, during the production, an unpublished Guide for processing various stratigraphic maps into Formation was used, as well as the latest results published in publications or presented at conferences and congresses relating to geological research of the territory of the Republic of Srpska. Након израде Основне геолошке карте СФРЈ 1:100 000, прешло се на израду Формационе геолошке карте СФРЈ. Након распада бивше СФРЈ, израду ове карте за своје територије наставиле су да раде некадашње државе чланице. Након израде Основне геолошке карте Републике Српске 1:300 000 започето је са израдом Формационе геолошке карте а у складу са Дугорочним програмом развоја основних геолошких истраживања Републике Српске. Поред Геолошке карте Републике Српске 1:300 000 и Тумача, током израде коришћено је и непубликовано Упуство за прераду разних стратиграфских карата у формационе као и најновији резултати штампани у публикацијама или приказани на конференцијама и конгресима а односе се на геолошка истраживања територије Републике Српске.
