Knowledge of geological structures is particularly important for every state, because it conditions the richness or poverty in terms of mineral resources. A type and kind of rocks are prerequisites for the creation of drinking water reserves, and bedrocks, together with climatic factors, condition the soil type important for food production. The relief is also conditioned by a geological structure and enables the utilization of water energy for electricity production. Геолошка карта Републике Српске 1:300 000 је прва прегледна геолошка карта Републике Српске на којој је приказана геолошка грађа и историја стварања терена од палеозоика до квартара, кроз временско раздобље од преко 600 милиона година. Познавање геолошке грађе је од посебног значаја за сваку државу, јер од геолошке грађе зависи богатство или сиромаштво минералним сировинама. Тип и врста стијена су услов за образовање залиха питких вода, што је од стратешког значаја за сваку државу, а стијенска подлога, уз климатске факторе, условљава тип тла који се на њој развија, који је од изузетног значаја за производњу хране. Рељеф је такође условљен геолошком грађом и омогућава искоришћење енергије воде за производњу електричне енергије итд. The Geological Map of the Republic of Srpska 1:300 000 was produced in accordance with the Long-Term Program for the Development of Basic Geological Research of the Republic of Srpska due to the need for creating a unified geological map of the Republic of Srpska. This map was largely compiled from the geology of the aforementioned Basic Geological Map of the SFRY. Основна геолошка карта СФРЈ 1:100 000 завршена је осамдесетих година прошлог вијека и публикована у облику већег броја листова. Геолошка карта Републике Српске 1:300 000 урађена је у складу са Дугорочним програмом развоја основних геолошких истраживања Републике Српске усљед потребе за израдом јединствене геолошке карте Републике Српске. Ова карта је највећим дијелом урађена компилацијом геологије са поменуте основне геолошке карте СФРЈ.
